Description
predatory marine reptile that lived during the Late Cretaceous period, about 70 to 66 million years ago. It belonged to the order Squamata, which also includes modern lizards and snakes. Mosasaurs were well-adapted for life in the water, with streamlined bodies, long tails, and paddle-like limbs. They were apex predators, preying on fish, squid, and even other marine reptiles. Some species grew up to 50 feet in length. Mosasaurs became extinct during the mass extinction event that wiped out the dinosaurs.
